The Romanesque buildings preserved in the city of Barcelona are very few. The most important one is the church of Sant Pau del Camp, an old Benedictine monastery founded at the end of the 9th century by Guifré II. The church was possibly destroyed by the army of Almanzor in 985, and was rebuilt in Omanesque style between the 11th and the 12th centuries.

The neighborhood

El Raval is a historic, cosmopolitan and traditionally poor neighbourhood to the west of the Ramblas. But due to its prime central location and the city´s transformation over the past decade, it is rapidly becoming a desirable place to live and socialise, with an ever-increasing number of trendy bars and restaurants around MACBA modern art museum.Running through the regenerated centre of the area is the tree-lined pedestrian boulevard Rambla de Raval with outdoor cafes.
The Apartment is a five-minute walk from the Ramblas, the Old Port and Montjuic mountain, which is home to the Olympic stadium and exotic botanical gardens.
To the south of El Raval is the Maritime Museum and various theatres along the main road Parallel. On Nou de la Rambla, which crosses Parallel, is the house known as Palau Guell, designed by legendary local architect Antoni Gaudi for his patron.
As part of the Raval´s transformation, many roads have been pedestrianised, fashion boutiques are emerging and there will soon be a five-star hotel overlooking the Rambla. In a few years, the area will have changed beyond recognition and become a rival to El Born for nightlife.
LA RAMBLA DE RAVAL. Last years this relatively newly created Rambla was completely dead, but it has now suddenly burst to life & is one of the best places to hang out in Barcelona. I would never have a coffee on the main Rambla (too expensive, too many tourists, too many people asking for money etc), but the RAMBLA DE RAVAL is much more laid back. Some of the Pakistani run Pizza places have rather strange service, but I like the falafel place down the other end near the large bronze cat (made by Botero, an important Latin American Artist). To get there from the apartment just head down Salvador Segui Square in the opposite direction to the other Rambla & you’ll cross it after about 2 minutes. Lots of palm trees. This summer there have been market stalls and live music every weekend. LA RAMBLA DE RAVAL. The author of this work of art has however shown disagreement with the decision of the Ciutat Vella district, taking into account that the authorities had promised to place the cat in front of MACBA. It is alright to revitalise a whole quarter, like El Raval, traditionally marginalised and full of conflicts, taking further in mind its recent urbanistic redevelopments and its cultural dynamics, but one cannot help understanding also Botero’s frustration. The artist has after all, similar works of art in the main thoroughfares of Madrid, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Chicago, NY There is an old legend, that when you drink the water from the fountains on Las Ramblas, you will always return to Barcelona. Whether the city's popularity can be attributed to the sorcery of the water, or the electricity of Barcelona's street life, remains in doubt. There is one fact that is truly undeniable, Barcelona is one of the most charming cities in Europe. Whether you're interested in the stylish shops of the Gothic Quarter, the museums and exhibits of Miro, Gaudi and Picasso, or would rather sip wine in one of the myriad of outdoor bars and cafes, you will find magic in this historic city. LA BOQUERIA MARKET. Head towards the Rambla & take any side street on the left & you will end up either in the market or round the back. Every kind of fresh food you can imagine. Las Ramblas, which is only is 2-minute walk from the apartment, is considered the heart of the city. Down the elegant avenue many Barcelonians take their evening stroll while the sun sets behind MontJuic. The tree-lined pedestrian strip is filled with flowers, outdoor cafes and restaurants, street performers and artists and connects the Plaza Cataluña with Barcelona's harbor. A 15-minute stroll towards the Mediterranean sea takes you to the Barceloneta: a seaside neighborhood famous for its white-sand beach and fresh seafood restaurants. Other nerby attractions include the Plaza de España (Magic Fountain), La Boqueria, Plaza Catalunya, and Barcelona's spired Gothic Cathedral. Also conveniently located is the green line of the BCN metro which takes you to the Gracia neighborhood and Gaudí's Paseo de Gracia houses.

(Short History)

This ethnically diverse and culturally rich working-class neighborhood has a special charm of its own, with small, quirky shops and eateries, welcoming bars, and hidden historical attractions. Beginning as a small rural area outside of the city walls, El Raval was enveloped by the new city boundaries in the 14th century, and has been squeezing people in ever since. The situation became critical in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when over-crowding led to an urban nightmare of rampant crime, prostitution, and drug use. Revitalization efforts, especially since the '92 Olympic games, have worked wonders, however; new museums and cultural centers have paved the way for some of the city's trendiest new restaurants and bars, and today El Raval is emerging as one of Barcelona's most dynamic areas.

The Night Life

The apartment, located in one of the main thoroughfares linking the Ramblas and Avenida Parallel, this is an ideal spot for budget-conscious travellers wanting to savour a more off-beat version of Barcelona’s nightlife, without having to splurge on expensive taxi fares. The Raval itself hosts a warren of tiny bars (try the one-room 'Edith Piaf'), transvestite nightclubs and self-consciously-chic cafés. The newly-renovated Rambla de Raval is just a 2 minutes’ walk away, as is, of course, the Ramblas, Plaza Reial, the Gothic Quarter, the mitic La Paloma disco or El Maremagnum. The ancient zona just next to -but so different from- Las Ramblas and the Barri Gòtic tends to be a favorite of Barcelona's natives rather than its tourists.

LOCAL BARS. Raval seems to be spawning more & more curious little seedy bars. Just a few doors down Calle Robador is the BATA DE BETINE that I’m rather fond of. It’s only 20 seconds walk away, which might be useful for a last beer on the way home! If you like that sort of thing, you will appreciate BAR MARSELLA on the corner of Sant Pau & Sant Ramon is an ex-brothel where the windows & mirrors haven’t been cleaned of 70 years is! A quirky little place that I like is “SIFO”, just near Bar Marsella on Calle Espalter. There is a gay bar, which is just called “B” round the corner on the Calle Carmen.

Almost all streets in the historic centre of Barcelona are noisy at night. If you choose to stay in this central apartment and you find noise is likely to disturb you, perhaps it might be worth bring earplugs (tapones in Spanish if you decide to buy them here). The entrance to Flat is in famous Calle Sant Pau. Some people may feel insecure, but as long as you are sensible it is no more dangerous than anywhere else in central Barcelona. We suggest that during your stay, you are particularly careful with your bags when you are seated in cafes or on the beach. They are the favourite places for robbing tourists.

Reviews

"It was the best vacation we have had. The apartment was just fantastic - we will probably have to rent it again (maybe in a few years)" Diana Skjernby

"We had a fantastic week in the apartment. It is very well functioning, cosy and charmingly furnished. You will most certainly hear from us again one day when we just have to visit that wonderful town again... So in short; " Mari-Luise Jonsson

"We had a really nice time in Barcelona and your apartment! Fantastic to be in the centre of a big city and just be ten minutes away from the sea!" Kjersti Eckblad

"The apartment was a perfect base for our first visit to Barcelona. The apartment is tastefully and comfortably decorate. Area with a lot of little boutiques to fulfil all our needs. Even though our language skills are pour we still felt welcomed both at the Boqueria market and in the tapas bar on the square. Maybe we rent the apartment again next time we are in Barcelona." Marianne Ibsen and Lars Nielsen.

How to get there

From the airport :
  • The easiest is to take a taxi from the airport (approx 16 Euro's + 0.85 Euro per piece of luggage). It's best to check the estimated price with the driver before going, in order to avoid the driver cheating with the taximeter.
  • There is also a train from the airport. It is slower and a little cheaper, but it is often delayed, which is very unfortunate when you want to catch a flight.
  • A good option is the airport bus right outside from the terminal. It costs around 3,60 Euro and will bring you to Plaza Catalunya. However, be careful when arriving. Many people get there luggage stolen in the confusion of arriving.
From Plaza Catalunya
  • You can take a taxi (approx 5 Euro + 0.85 Euro per piece of luggage) or take the subway from Plaza Catalunya, only one stop to Liceu (line 3, line green).
  • The best buy is probably to buy a 10 tours card (approx. 6,30 Euro's) - it is half price per journey.
While you are at Plaza Catalunya you can save some time by going to the turist information (under ground close to the airport bus stop). Here you can pick up maps and other information.

Useful links to Barcelona

http://www.tmb.net/eng/home.htm  A very good transport information service. Just write your address of the apartment (Calle Robador) and you can point anywhere in town and the system will tell you how to get there the fastest way. (if you don't want to take a cab)

http://www.bcn.es/english/ihome.htm  The official website of Barcelona - of course in English - with tourist information, transport guidelines, and what have you. Who said the Spanish where unorganised?

http://fotos.qdq.com/ A fantastic web site if you want to see how a specific adress looks in Barcelona. You just type in the address of the apartment (Calle Robador) and sim-sala-bim a picture (or two) of the facade pops up.
